The aim of this study was to develop a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model of a sound extracted human second premolar from micro-CT data using commercially available software tools. A detailed 3D FE model of the tooth could be constructed and was experimentally validated by comparing strains calculated in the FE model with strain gauge measurement of the tooth under loading. The regression coefficient and its standard error in the regression analysis between strains calculated by the FE model and measured with strain gauge measurement were 0.82 and 0.06, respectively, and the correlation coefficient was found to be highly significant. These results suggested that an FE model reconstructed from micro-CT data could be used as a valid model to estimate the actual strains with acceptable accuracy.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution aspect of unrestored and restored combined shape (wedge shape occlusally and saucer shape gingivally) class V cavity, which found frequently in clinical cases.A maxillary second premolar restored with a combined shape class V composite restorations were modeled using the three dimensional finite element method. Static occlusal load of 170 N was applied on lingual incline of buccal cusp at the angle of 45�with the longitudinal axis of the tooth. And three dimensional finite element analysis was taken by ANSYS (Version 6.0, Swanson Analysis System Co., Houston, U.S.A) program which represent the stress distribution on unrestored and restored cavity wall and margin.The conclusions were as follows. 1. Compared to the unrestored cavity, Von Mises stress at the cementoenamel junction and line angle of the cavity base were reduced and in restored cavity. 2. Von Mises stress at the occlusal and cervical cavity margin and wall were increased in restored cavity in comparison with the unrestored cavity. 3. In the hybrid and hybrid/flowable composite resin restoration, Von Mises stress at the cementoenamel junction and line angle of the cavity base were reduced more than in the flowable restoration. 4. In the hybrid and hybrid/flowable composite resin restoration, Von Mises stress at the occlusal and cervical cavity margin and wall were increased more than in the flowable restoration.

Relations Between Shape, Materials Properties, and Function in Biological Materials Using Laser Speckle Interferometry: In situ Tooth Deformation

The manner in which stiff biological objects, such as whole bones and teeth, deform under load can provide direct insight into their in vivo functions, while highlighting the relations between their structure and materials properties. A new approach for studying the mechanical functions of such objects, using as an example the crowns of human teeth, is developed. Tooth‐crown deformation under a compressive load is determined in water using laser speckle interferometry. The deformation patterns are analyzed using a novel procedure that reveals the relative magnitudes of 3D displacements of the outer surface. Nanometer‐scale deformations of natural teeth were compared to deformations of identical acrylic replicas, in order to differentiate between contributions of the structure–material properties from contributions of morphology. It is shown that human premolars deform in a manner that is largely controlled by shape; in natural teeth, the enamel cap appears to displace mainly as a rigid body, undergoing moderate deformation. These observations contribute to the understanding of whole‐tooth performance under load. The approach for analyzing the deformation of loaded whole objects is directly applicable to the study of many stiff biological specimens, including comparisons between normal and altered (repaired or genetically modified) bones.
