Stress spectrum disorders in oncology

Abstract: Cancer is a unique psychological experience. Its relapsing course and life-threatening nature constitute a potential source of severe and chronic stress, resulting in long-term psychological distress, poor quality of life and psychopathology. Biological consequences of cumulative stress include catecholamine hyperactivity and glucocorticoid dysregulation, and also affect the immune system. The understanding of those physiopathologic pathways needs further investigation, as the development of adequate screening… Show more

“…It is known that catecholamine hyperactivity and glucocorticoid disregulation are the biological consequences of chronic stress (Desaive and Ronson, 2008). The results of this study show that long-term treadmill running produced adaptive physiological changes which are indicative for chronic stress.…”

“…Reverse transcription was performed using Ready-To-Go You-Prime First-Strand Bead (Amersham Biosciences, UK) and pd (N) 6 Random Hexamer (Amersham Biosciences, UK) primer according to the manufacturer's protocol. After the isolation of mRNA, DNA-ase treatment was applied with DNAse I (Fermentas, Lithuania).…”

“…Cancer patients have very high chronic stress responses caused by psychosocial distress [20,21]. The biological consequences of cumulative stress include catecholamine hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) response [22], and the SNS plays a key role in the activation of BAT. Our study, which reduced the interference of low outdoor temperature, further demonstrates that more active neoplastic status was associated with more vigorous TMA of BAT.…”

“…Anxiety is well documented in patients with the diagnosis of cancer and the initiation of treatment (10)(11)(12)(13). Patients are confronted with the worry of death at the time of diagnosis.…”

“…Among the various types of psychological responses, anxiety and depression received most attention in the studies of cancer patients (10). Anticipatory anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder are the two types of anxiety known to be related to the initiation and consequence of cancer treatment (10)(11)(12)(13). Depression encompasses a spectrum that ranges from normal sadness to major depressive disorder.…”
