“…Second, several psychological variables including mental depression (Calabrese, Skwerer, & Barna, 1986; Kiecolt-Glaser, Garnner, et al, 1984; Schleifer et al, 1983) and perceived loss of control and feelings of helplessness (Baum, McKinnon, & Silva, 1987; Rodin, 1988) have also been associated with altered immune functioning. Third, suggestive evidence has accrued associating psychosocial stress with the progression of HIV-1 infections (Cecchi, 1984; Coates, Temoshok, & Mandel, 1984; Donlou, Wolcott, Gottlieb, & Landsverk, 1985; Solomon & Temoshok, 1987), and putative mechanisms have been offered to explain these associations including stressor-triggered activation of latent HIV-1 to a state of active replication (Glaser & Kiecolt-Glaser, 1987; Sodroski, Rosen, & Haseltine, 1984, cited in Solomon, 1987).
