“…For example, future research should investigate whether sleep quality, supportive relationships with parents, and peers and other contextual factors could contribute to these differences. Moreover, given that recent work has shown that a combination of strategies (Chen et al, 2012;Dich et al, 2015;Doan et al, 2016) as opposed to individual ones are better at distinguishing different profiles of physiological dysregulation, future work should focus on how the interrelations between specific processes such as emotion regulation and negative affect can influence distinct profiles of mental and physical health outcomes.…”

“…We used 10 physiological markers from venous blood samples, vital signs monitor, and quantitative magnetic resonance that were available from the cohort. Measures of allostatic load in existing studies of children are far less comprehensive than those in adults, either lacking blood samples ( 57 , 58 ) or missing either cardiac, metabolic, or inflammatory components of allostatic load ( 58 , 59 ). Moreover, there is no consensus on how allostatic load should be computed ( 60 , 61 ).…”

“…In particular, self-regulatory processes that involve stoicism and emotion suppression and enable persistence through challenge may be pernicious contributors to allostatic load amid cumulative stress. Children low in emotionality and who also showed high persistence on an impossible puzzle task evinced higher allostatic load in late adolescence as compared to those who are more emotional (Doan et al, 2016 ). These findings support the hypothesis that high self-regulatory persistence combined with a stoic emotional profile may lead to chronic arousal of the nervous system and increased allostatic load conferring risk for health problems.…”
