The expression of soma genes is speclflcally altered. The water stress induces the synthesis of heat-shock and wound· response proteins. The rearrangement of the membrane structure is correlated with the imbibition state of the ce lis. Similar ellects of the water environment are observed during the somalie embryogenesis. The process of the water-stress metabolism can be useful in plant biotechnology.
