Stress Coping

Abstract: This article presents a two-pronged attempt to synthesize the research on stress coping: (1) a review of models and taxonomies of behaviors and resources related to stress coping and (2) a meta-analysis of recent experimental and quasi- experimental studies of stress coping. The review led to the construction of a taxonomy and, in conjunction with the meta-analysis, to a comprehensive model of stress coping in two parts (stress and coping). In the meta-analysis an unbiased effect size of .57 was obtained by co… Show more

The stress model presented in Fig.…”

“…The CRISSY (Matheny et al 1989) is an instrument that measures student stressors, coping resources, and stress symptoms in elementary and junior-high school students. Four categories of stressors are measured: school environment (e.g., "My classroom is too crowded"), social environment (e.g., "Other kids tease me"), family environment (e.g., "I live with only one of my parents"), and personal environment (e.g., "I have scary dreams").…”

“…One form of measurable resources people use to confront transitions and events is stress coping. Many researchers (e.g., Lazarus & Folkman, 1984;Matheny, Aycock, Pugh, Curlette, & Cannella, 1986) have worked to define stress and establish models for the study of stress. According to Lazarus and Folkman (1984), stress occurs when individuals perceive a situation as exceeding their potential to manage that event.…”

“…Cumulatively, this body of research suggests that the behaviors and attitudes used for positive career transition may relate to structural models of stress coping. Matheny et al (1986) defined stress coping behaviors as individuals' reactions toward stressful circumstances. These authors built a taxonomical model of stress coping behaviors and resources.…”
