Stress Concentration Factors for Cutouts in Uniaxially Loaded Plates

Abstract: The technical literature is briefly traced so as to identify comprehensive summaries of available data. The Inglis hypothesis, that the stress concentration factor for an equivalent ellipse can be used to estimate the stress concentration factor for a nonelliptic cutout, is shown to be valid provided the inclination of the semimajor axis to direction of uniform axial stress is taken into account. Means for determining inclination and half-length of cutout are illustrated.
