Abstract:The technical literature is briefly traced so as to identify comprehensive summaries of available data. The Inglis hypothesis, that the stress concentration factor for an equivalent ellipse can be used to estimate the stress concentration factor for a nonelliptic cutout, is shown to be valid provided the inclination of the semimajor axis to direction of uniform axial stress is taken into account. Means for determining inclination and half-length of cutout are illustrated.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
