Stress and Immune Responses II. Identification of Stress-Sensitive Cells in Murine Spleen Cells

Abstract: Abstract-The influences of restraint stress on the functions of T cells, B cells and adherent cells in antibody responses were investigated. Antibody response against sheep red blood cells (SRBC), a T cell-dependent antigen, in cultured splenocytes from restrained mice was reduced to about 40-50% of that from the control mice. Addition of normal T cells to these cultures, however, restored the suppressed response. Moreover, helper T cell activities were lowered in restrained mice. On the other hand, suppressor … Show more

“…Pre-administration of metyrapone partially blocked the suppression of PFC response to TD antigen, but on the contrary, it inhibited the increase of number of PFC/106 spleen cells to TI antigen. We have previously demonstrated that both helper T cell and suppressor T cell activities were suppressed, but B cell activities were rather enhanced in splenocytes from restrained mice (24). In this study, the number of PFC/spleen to TNP-LPS was not increased by restraint stress.…”

“…Okimura et at. [43] have reported that adherent cells from restrained mice have identical ability lo support the PFC (plaque-forming cell) response in Sephadex G-10 column-passed spleen cells (adherent cell depleted) as adherent cells from control mice. We have, on the other hand, observed a decreased ability in adherent cells from stressed mice to support mitogenesis of lymphocytes.…”

“…On the other hand. Okimura et al [43] have reported that no differenee between antigen presenting eells from miee subjected to restraint stress and control mice could be observed. One aim ofthe present was to study in more detail whether stress directly affected Ihe accessory cells or the T lymphocytes, or both, when spleen cells were stimulated wilh mitogens.…”
