Stress Analysis of Tubular Failures During Hydraulic Fracturing: Cases and Lessons Learned

Abstract: Wellbore integrity during the full life cycle of a well has always been a focus of the petroleum industry, particularly during extreme drilling conditions and throughout complex well operations. Pumping compound fluids during hydraulic fracturing operations affects stresses on all tubular components, which can lead to component failure. During casing and tubing design, expected stresses are determined. This includes kick tolerance, drilling and production operations, and complete wellbore evacuation. However, … Show more

“…The casing stresses are further amplified due to thermal and pressure in volume fracturing of shale gas wells ). In addition, Haghshenas et al (2017) and pointed out that casing deformation is due to imposed additional load by fracture slip and weak bedding plane through the wellbore in the process of hydraulic fracturing. The studies of Mohammed et al (2020) and Yin et al (2018) show that creep load (slippage) lead to an increase of transverse displacement and stresses on the casing.…”

“…Other authors focused on technologies used to detect and quantify casing failures (Hamilton and Pattillo 2019;McCarthy et al 2020;Robertson et al 2020). Additional papers have focused on the cause of casing deformations and failures (Denny 2012;Haghshenas 2017;Mazhar and Ighalo 2018;Robinson et al 2020). Most recently, data analytics have been used to predict casing failures (Noshi et al 2018;Carpenter 2019).…”
