Streptococcus intermedius Bacteremia and Pyogenic Liver Abscess in a Patient With No Risk Factors

Abstract: This case report depicts a 39-year-old male with no significant past medical history who was admitted for fever of unknown origin and sepsis. He was then found to have Streptococcus intermedius bacteremia and pyogenic liver abscess. The treatment course was complicated by pleural empyema leading to readmission. We found 34 articles meeting the inclusion criteria ( Table 2 ), of which 4 described concomitant brain and lung abscesses, but none reported the presence of lung and brain abscesses due to S. intermedius associated with left sided endocarditis [ 1 , 2 , 8 , 9 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 ].
