Strengthening the global system of protected areas post-2020: A perspective from the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas

Abstract: Protected areas are the cornerstones of biodiversity conservation and have never been more relevant than at the present time when the world is facing both a biodiversity and a climate change crisis. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) has been helping to set global standards and best practice guidelines in protected area planning and management for 60 years. Following this guidance, many countries have made significant progress toward their Aichi… Show more

“…Um documento publicado em 2020 pela Comissão Mundial de Áreas Protegidas (MacKinnon et al, 2020) também chama a atenção para as inter-relações entre os meios bióticos e abióticos, destacando a interdependência entre eles (Crofts et al, 2021). Segundo os autores, construir guias de boas práticas em geoconservação é uma solução para superar a hegemonia da biodiversidade e demonstrar que os aspectos físicos e biológicos caminham juntos e são interdependentes.…”

“…When integrated into well-designed networks, PAs that are connected to each other and integrated with other land use plans can facilitate species' adaptation to climate change and act as stepping stones for range shifts (Littlefield et al, 2019;Lopoukhine et al, 2012;MacKinnon et al, 2020). PA networks that incorporate considerations of both connectivity and climate change in their design and management provide protected routes and safe 'landing places' for shifting species, ensuring they remain protected even as they move in geographic space (Roberts et al, 2017).…”

“…Campos‐Silva et al., 2018; Diemont & Martin, 2009; Sabin et al., 2019; Terer et al., 2012). Some existing territories and areas conserved by IPLCs have also been added to the global protected and conserved area network (Dudley et al., 2018; MacKinnon et al., 2020). However, such cases tend to be geographically scarce and temporally sporadic, even across Latin America where Indigenous rights have gained considerably greater political traction than Africa or Asia (Colchester, 2004; Tauli‐Corpuz et al., 2020).…”
