Complex engineering systems execute within different contexts and domains. The heterogeneity induced by these contexts is usually implicitly handled in the development cycle of such systems. We claim that reducing this heterogeneity can be achieved by handling explicitly the knowledge mined from these domains and contexts. Verification and validation activities are improved due to the expression and verification of new constraints and properties directly extracted from the context and domains associated to the models. In this paper, we advocate the use of domain ontologies to express both domain and context knowledge. We propose to enrich design models that describe complex information systems, with domain knowledge, expressed by ontologies, provided by their context of use. This enrichment is achieved by annotation of the design models by references to ontologies. Three annotation mechanisms are proposed. The resulting annotated models are checked to validate the new minded domain properties. We have experimented this approach in a model driven engineering (MDE) development setting.

Checking the conformance of a system design to a standard is a central activity in the system engineering life cycle, a fortiori when the concerned system is deemed critical. Standard conformance checking entails ensuring that a system or a model of a system faithfully meets the requirements of a specification of a standard improving the robustness and trustworthiness of the system model. In this paper, we present a formal framework based on the correct-by-construction Event-B method and related theories for formally checking the conformance of a formal system model to a formalised standard specification by construction. This framework facilitates the formalization of standard concepts and rules as an ontology, as well as the formalization of an engineering domain, using an Event-B theory consisting of data types and a collection of operators and properties. Conformance checking is accomplished by annotating the system model with typing conditions. We address an industrial case study borrowed from the aircraft cockpit engineering domain to demonstrate the feasibility and strengths of our approach. The ARINC 661 standard is formalised as an Event-B theory. This theory formally models and annotates the safety-critical real-world application of a weather radar system for certification purposes.

Clinical guidelines systematically assist practitioners to provide an appropriate health care in specific clinical circumstances. A significant number of guidelines and protocols is lacking in quality. Indeed, ambiguity and incompleteness are likely anomalies in medical practice. In order to find anomalies and to improve the quality of medical protocols, this paper presents a stepwise formal development of a medical protocol. In this development, we define the domain concepts based on ontologies and integrate them with the medical protocol in an explicit way. In this work, we use the Event B language for modelling a domain model using ontologies and capturing the functional behaviour of the medical protocol. Our main contributions are: to use domain-specific knowledge in a system model explicitly; to link a domain model and a system model using an annotation mechanism; and to use a proof-based formal approach to evaluate a medical protocol. An assessment of the proposed approach is given through a case study, relative to a real-life reference protocol (electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation), which covers a wide variety of protocol characteristics related to different heart conditions.IMPEX Project (ANR-13-INSE-0001), webpage: http://impex.loria.fr.
