Abstract：In the present study, crack healing effect and residual stress of Al2O3 ceramics were investigated by changing the sintering temperature and heat treatment conditions. And also it was investigated that the influence of different filler loadings of nano-sized SiC particles on the crack healing behavior of Al2O3 ceramics. The test samples were characterized by three point bend flexural tests to evaluate their mechanical properties. The morphological changes were studied by FE-SEM and EDS. The test results indicated that the Al2O3 with nano-sized SiC ceramics sintered at 1800 ℃ were showed highest density. Sintering temperature at 1800 ℃, the bending strength of heat treatment in air atmosphere specimens showed about 42 % increment in comparison to the un-heat treated specimens. The cracked specimens can be healed by heat treatment in vacuum atmosphere but the crack healing effect of Al2O3 ceramics, which is heat treated in air atmosphere was higher than that of heat treated in vacuum atmosphere. Al2O3 with 30 wt% of SiC ceramics indicated higher crack healing ability than that with 15 wt% of SiC ceramics. The effect of particle size on the oxidation kinetics of TiC powders is studied. Different sizes of TiC powder ranging from nanometre to submillimetre sizes are investigated. The samples are heated at different heating rates from room temperature up to 1200°C in dry synthetic air. The Kissinger method for analysis of non-isothermal oxidation is used to estimate the activation energy for oxidation of the powders and to identify the active temperature window for efficient self-healing. The master curve plotting method is used to identify the model which best describes the oxidation of TiC powders, and the Senum and Yang method is used to approximate the value for the Arrhenius constant. The oxidation of TiC proceeds via the formation of oxycarbides, anatase and then finally the most stable form: rutile. The activation energy is found to be a strong function of the particle size for particle sizes between 50 nm and 11 lm and becomes constant at larger particle sizes. The data demonstrate how the minimal healing temperature for oxide ceramics containing TiC as healing particles can be tailored between 400 and 1000°C by selecting the right average TiC particle size.

Finite Element Analysis of Self-Healing and Damage Processes in Alumina/SiC Composite Ceramics

Among various ceramic matrix composites developed, self-healing ceramics have been studied as new functional materials. Self-healing occurs in such materials by high-temperature oxidation triggered by a micro-crack initiation on the surface, and the strength of the material autonomously recovers to its robust state since the micro-crack is re-bonded. To facilitate the use of self-healing ceramics in machines and equipment, a novel numerical simulation method based on finite element analysis (FEA) needs to be applied. In this study, we applied a previously proposed constitutive model to a series of self-healing and damage processes. In the constitutive model, the damage process is formulated on the basis of fracture mechanics, while the self-healing process is formulated on the basis of empirical oxidation kinetics. The FEA model implemented the constitutive model to simulate a series of experiments of the alumina/15 vol% SiC composites. The self-healing process was targeted to a prescribed damage by Vickers indentation. Thereafter, the self-healing behavior was quantitatively compared with that observed in the experiment. The results suggest that the proposed FEA approach can be applied to the analysis of ceramic matrix composites with self-healing properties.
