Polystyrene is extensively used in building and construction industry, packaging and transportation of fragile equipment due its low density, high melting point, low thermal conductivity, low water absorption, etc. Polystyrene after usage is usually discarded thereby causing environmental problems. The post-usage of polystyrene has, therefore, been a subject of intense research in recent times. The aim of this work is to produce adhesive from polystyrene wastes. Polystyrene waste (PS) was collected, processed and dissolved in tackifyer and formulated with diphnyle amine and diethylene glycol dibenzoate additives to produce adhesive using 3 levels variables factors and 4 levels testing factors of design expert optimization software. The produced adhesive was further characterized for viscosity, pH, percentages solid and moisture contents for their response surfaces. The results showed that the best fit viscosity for each run was Run 1B> Run 5A > Run 5D> Run 5B>Run 4D based on the regression analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The pH values obtained ranged from 4.0 to 6.3; percentage moisture content was in the order of Run 1B < 5A<4D<4B and percentage solid content was in the order of Run 1B<5A<4D. The best fitted adhesive was run 1B with 5.93 % moisture content; 5A has 7.57 % moisture content and 4D with 8.76% moisture content. The percentage solid content; Run 1B has 67.19 %, 5A has 68.16 % and 4D has 75.50 %. The produced adhesives were found within the standard range of adhesives used in production of particleboard.

Influence of Moisture Content on the Bond Strength and Water Resistance of Bonded Wood Joints

Bonding processes play a significant role in the wood and furniture industry. They allow for the creation of fixed joining of construction elements, creation of new materials and, last but not least, aesthetic appreciation of parts. However, the quality of bonded joints is affected by many factors, one of which is the moisture of the bonded materialwood. The main objective of this research was to determine the influence of wood moisture on the strength of bonded joints formed by polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and polyurethane (PUR) adhesives. In current practice these adhesives are being increasingly used for their properties and zero formaldehyde content. The procedure for determining the bond strength (tensile shear strength of lap joints) corresponded to standard EN 205. It was ascertained that in addition to actual moisture of bonded wood, the quality of the joint is also affected by the environment to which the glued joint is subsequently subjected. In a normal environment, the strength of the tested joint PVAc adhesive decreases with increasing wood moisture, but it still meets the requirement of the standard. In a humid environment, the strength falls below the limit of the standardized value. In a normal environment the joint strength bonded with PUR adhesive is similar, but the decrease in strength is lower. In a humid environment it shows the highest strength at 20% wood moisture and meets the specified standard minimum strength (4 MPa). Graphs were created from the measured values that clearly show the influence of wood moisture on the final bond strength of a joint.

The influence of selected factors, such as wood species, veneer combinations, and loading cycles, on the bending strength and modulus of elasticity of glued laminated wood was investigated after cyclic loading of 0, 1000, 3000, and 7000 cycles with European beech (Fagus sylvatica (L.)) and Eurasian aspen (Populus tremula (L.)) The laminated woods were created by a combination of densified and non-densified veneers. The 30% densification was carried out by cold rolling. All factors and their interactions had statistically significant influence on the modulus of elasticity. Similarly, the influence of all factors on bending strength was statistically significant. However, the mutual interaction of all factors had no significant effect.
