Honeycomb fiber-reinforced polymer sandwich panels with sinusoidal core geometry have shown to be successful both for new construction and rehabilitation of existing bridge decks. This investigation is aimed to study the strength properties of the facesheet and to develop an optimized facesheet configuration. A progressive failure model is developed using finite element method to predict the behavior of laminated composite plates up to failure, where the failure criteria are introduced through prescribed user-defined subroutines. The accuracy of the model is verified through correlations between finite element results and existing experimental data. This model is then applied to carry out a parametric study on facesheet. Three variables are included: material properties, including bidirectional stitched fabrics, unidirectional layer of fiber roving, and chopped strand mat; layer thickness; and layer sequences. The quality of each alternative is evaluated based on stiffness and strength performance. In order to further investigate the behavior of facesheet experimentally, coupon samples on selected configurations to evaluate compressive, bending, and shear strengths were tested. The test results are also used to validate the progress failure model developed in this study. Through this combined experimental and numerical study, the strength properties of facesheet are obtained, which permit the optimization of facesheet design.

The overarching goal of this study was to perform a comprehensive evaluation of various issues related to the strength and serviceability of the FRP deck panels that are available in the industry. Specific objectives were to establish critical limit states to be considered in the design of FRP deck panel, to provide performance specifications to designers, and to develop evaluation techniques for the deck panels in service. Two different FRP panels were studied during the research project: a sandwich panel and a pultruded panel. The sandwich panel was initially selected for the rehabilitation case study bridge. However, for a variety of reasons outside of the scope of this study, both the sandwich panel and the initial case study bridge were dropped from consideration. A new case study bridge was selected, and new proposals from FRP deck manufacturers were solicited. At that time, the pultruded deck was selected. Analysis and experimental results related to both FRP deck panels are included in this report, as information from both decks is relevant to the overarching goal of this study. In November 2009, Sugar Creek Bridge became the first bridge in Indiana to be rehabilitated with an FRP bridge deck. An extensive study, including literature review, analysis, and load tests, suggest that the installed deck should perform well, with web buckling as the ultimate failure mode at a factor of safety of 5. Deflection limits, generally an issue with FRP decks, are satisfied with the installed deck. Meanwhile, some combination of acoustic emission methods, infrared thermography and a newly developed traveling truck deflection method show promise for non-destructive evaluation of the deck in-situ and identification of damage such as delamination of the wearing surface or web buckling. However, such methods have shown variability and could be prohibitively labor-intensive. Therefore, further evaluation is needed if such methods are to be pursued.

Load Deflection and Ultimate Strength Properties of Sandwich Lightweight Foamed Concrete Panels

The interaction that exists between two wythes of concrete, inner and outer, goes a long way to establish the structural behavior of the whole components and particularly, lightweight foamed concrete sandwich panel. Precast concrete sandwich panel (PCSP) has become a household name since it has been utilized in the construction of structural shell in some building types. This research investigated the load deflection of six different lightweight foamed concrete panels. The six panels were produced using a foamed concrete mix of the same density and the mechanical properties of the mix were tested. Each panel consists of two withes (facings) made of lightweight foamed concrete and polystyrene was used as the core and the insulation layer. Mild steel wire mesh of 6mm sizes was used as reinforcement in three of the panels while 9mm diameter high yield steel was used in the remaining three panels. The reinforcement in both facing was tied together using shear and bend to an angle of 450.End crushing of the panels was avoided using concrete capping. An axial load test was conducted, the load deflection, mode of failure and crack patterns of the panels was observed. The result also revealed that panels with concrete capping deflect along with their Wythe in the same directions and small deflection was recorded in panels with concrete capping. Cracking modes in panels reinforced with 6mm mild steel were controlled by material failure while those in panels with 9mm high yield steel, cracks was only observed at the lower part of the capping.
