Scientometric Analysis of Global Research on the Utilization of Geopolymer Composites in Construction Applications

This study conducts a scientometric review on the use of geopolymer mortar and composites in different construction applications. It aims to analyze the findings of past research and reveal the research constituents, development trends, and knowledge gaps. The Scopus database was employed to retrieve the relevant publications, while Bibliometrix was used to conduct the statistical analyses. Results revealed a steady and gradual increase in the number of publications after 2013, as the annual growth rate increased from 23.9% to 45.2% between the timeframes 2003–2013 and 2014–2022, respectively. The analysis highlighted that many authors collaborated on different construction applications of geopolymers regardless of geographic location. Meanwhile, Construction and Building Materials, China, and Universiti Malaysia Perlis were found to be the predominant journal, country, and institution, respectively. The scientometric analysis showed that the most frequently investigated applications for geopolymer mortars and composites were fire resistance, corrosion protection, and repair. Research gaps highlighted that other applications are not as well investigated despite the promising performance of the geopolymer composites, including 3D printing, heavy metals absorption, environmental protection, and underwater applications. Future research is required to assess the use of other alumina and silica-rich binders in geopolymers while also exploring their lifecycle assessment and economic impact.

Soil-cement brick is one of the most common building materials for masonry construction, although it is not the oldest. As it is a product made up basically of soil and cement, it has existed in Brazil since the appearance of cement. The brick has been gaining market share due to several characteristics: ease of production, as it can be produced at the construction site itself, ease of obtaining raw material, as the soils exist in all locations, low processing costs, and easy handling. In addition, the soil-cement brick, also called ecological brick, stands out for not harming the environment like the ceramic brick that needs to be burned. Despite being a standardized product, production procedures and properties need to be updated. As an example, the soil used is very coarse which makes it difficult for the components to react. After conformation, the cure is still carried out without humidification, not obtaining adequate resistance. Furthermore, durability has been little studied. Thus, this article presents a literature review based on research in the production of soil-cement bricks. Materials and research methods used in the process of making soil-cement bricks, as well as various properties, are discussed. The most common results are grouped. The literature review showed that the production process is well defined, although it needs improvement. As for material properties, they meet the standards. However, the entire process needs more research.

The use of waste materials in soil stabilization is very important in terms of recycling of waste materials and reducing environmental pollution. The aim of this study is to investigate the effective use of waste marble dust, WMD in deep soil mixing, which is one of the ground improvement techniques used for problematic soils. In this study, loose sand was mixed with cement and different proportions of WMD. First, soil-binder mixtures were formed by using cement as a binder material and then cement was replaced by different percentages of WMD. Series of tests were performed to evaluate the effect of WMD on the mechanical properties of the mixtures, such as unconfined compressive strength, stress-strain behavior, toughness, modulus of elasticity and resilient modulus. Ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) test was also carried out on the specimens. The specimens were also examined under a microscope to investigate the pore spaces and surface bonds. In addition, setting time and bulk density of the specimens were studied. The optimum replacement percentage of WMD was found to be (10) at a binder-soil ratio of (20). Reuse of WMD in deep soil mixing is promising and will provide significant cost saving and environmental protection.
