Streblid bat flies (Diptera) and other ectoparasites on bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) from French Guiana

Abstract: Recent field surveys of bats (Chiroptera) in various localities of French Guiana have been accompanied by the collection and preservation of ectoparasites, mainly bat flies (Diptera: Streblidae and Nycteribiidae). Most specimens of ectoparasites was collected haphazardly during the course of bats inventories, but systematic surveys on the whole chiropteran community were realized at five opportunities. Concerning Streblidae, 813 individuals have been examined, which represent 46 species and/or subspecies belon… Show more

“…They are all associated with various Strebla species and members of the Trichobius parasiticus-complex. Although our dataset does not cover all batbat fly interactions known from the literature for the Neotropics Wenzel, 1976;Dick & Gettinger, 2005;Graciolli et al, 2019), we see a clear grouping of bat species using the same roosting structures. Adding records from the literature might make this observation even clearer.…”

“…Remarks. Basilia ortizi was previously recorded in Belize, Costa Rica, French Guiana, Venezuela, and Brazil (Graciolli et al 2007;Graciolli et al 2019) (Fig. 3C) can be differentiated from A. phyllostomatis Perty, 1833 because the latter has a smaller mesespisternum (seen from dorsal view), and from A. falcata Wenzel, 1976 because the former has two epiproct setae and less curved gonopods (Guerrero 1994b).…”

“…The maximum number of parasites per host individual was 18 bat flies, Antonini (2011) in Brazil registered 25 andTlapaya-Romero et al (2015) in Mexico 26. Trichobius parasiticus + S. wiedemanni presented a higher frequency between the associations of different bat fly species; this infracommunity is widely registered in this host (e.g., Aguiar and Antonini 2011, 2016, Graciolli et al 2019, Barbier et al 2021. Teixeira and Ferreira (2010) record S. wiedemanni and T. furmani, considering that the second species replaces T. parasiticus in some regions of South America (Bertola et al 2005, Guerrero 1995.…”
