Abstract: A method for efficient collection of stratospheric hydrogen chloride has been developed. Initial measurements for HCl, HBr and particulate Cl and Br are given.

“…The calculated HCl profile can reproduce fairly well the observations by Lazrus et al (1975), Farmer et al (1976) and Ackerman et al (1976). This implies the stratospheric source of ClOx from the chlorocarbons can provide enough HCl to account for the observed HCl content.…”

“…This result has been obtained by as- Fig. 4 Calculated height distributions of HCl and ClX (=ClOx + HCl) densities, together with the measured densities of HCl by Lazrus et al (1975), Farmer et al (1976 and Ackerman et al (1976).…”

“…Solomon, 1999; Heckendorn et al, 2009), there are few measurements of the halogen content of stratospheric particles. Limited filter samples were taken in the 1970s, largely to verify that most of the chlorine released from chlorofluorocarbons was in the gas phase (Lazrus et al, 1975). Mass spectrometer measurements of single particles also detected halogens (Murphy and Thomson, 2000).…”

“…The fluorine content of stratospheric aerosols at 15–20 km altitude is an insignificant fraction of total fluorine (Mroz et al, 1977; Murphy and Thomson, 2000). The chlorine content in the midlatitude lower stratosphere is also very small, estimated at about 17 ppt (molar) using filters or less than roughly 10 ppt using mass spectrometry (Lazrus et al, 1975; Murphy and Thomson, 2000). Some high values of aerosol chlorine measured on filters may have been due to adsorption (Turco et al, 1982).…”

“…The first measurements of stratospheric HCl based on air-sampling by means of balloon or aircraft platforms were reported by Lazrus et al (1975Lazrus et al ( , 1976. Spectroscopic measurements by infrared solar absorption technique from the ground and aircrafts has been used by Farmer et al (1976) and Mankin and Coffey (1983), and from stratospheric balloons by Williams et al (1976a), Ackerman et al (1976), and Raper et al (1977).…”
