“…As summarized by Neuman et al (1989, pp. 80, 81), postOrdovician brachiopod and ostracode faunas show a continuing faunal isolation of Avalon from the Laurentian margin (also see Copeland and Berdan, 1977;Shride, 1976). Boucot (1993, p. 47) stressed that ''there must be a very important tectonic boundary that juxtaposes an eastern Coastal Acadia block with European biogeographic affinities to a terrane with North American biogeographic affinities''.…”

“…1, CVA). The Newbury contains abundant andesite and related calcalkaline volcanics (Shride, 1976) of continental arc character (McKenna et al, 1993). Although exposures preclude determination of the original terrane association, the Newbury is reasonably inferred to be the volcanic expression of calc-alkalic intermediate to granitic Silurian and Early Devonian plutonism in the Putnam-Nashoba belt (Hepburn et al, 1995, p. 361;references therein).…”

“…Most of the known prehistoric quarry sites in southeastern New England that served as sources of felsitic rocks are within the Lynn/ Mattapan, Blue Hill, and Wamsutta volcanic complexes (MHC, 1980;Ritchie and Hermes, 1992). The Newbury volcanics (located north of the Boston basin; Shride, 1976) and the Spencer Hill volcanics of central Rhode Island (Hermes et al, 1994) also contain felsitic rocks that may represent potential lithic source areas. These complexes contain volcanic rocks displaying a wide range of color, textures, and weathering patterns that present a challenge to lithic sourcing studies.…”

“…Accordingly, the age of the Boston Bay Group could be limited to, and is most likely, Proterozoic Z and possibly Early Cambrian. The Boston Bay Group is shown as Paleozoic or Proterozoic Z on a new bedrock geologic map of Massachusetts (Zen and others, 1981) (Shride, 1976;Billings, 1976) and with the Proterozoic Zor younger Mattapan Volcanic Complex (see discussions by Shride, 1976, p. 173-174, andBillings, jn Skehan andothers, 1979, p. AI7-AI8). The Lynn is intruded by alkalic grariTte of the Quincy type (LaForge, 1932, p. 33), but, according to R. L. Zartman (oral commun.. I960), two groups of alkalic rocks exist in the area, one of Ordovician age (Quincy type) and one of Devonian age (Peabody type).…”
