Stratigraphic status of coal horizon in Tatapani–Ramkola Coalfield, Chhattisgarh, India

Abstract: The palynostratigraphic data given here are based on the explored borecores (TRBD-2, TRBD-3 and TROD-1), by Geological Survey of India. The Permian strata worked-out is about 1174.00 m thick and comprises from base to top-Talchir, Barakar and Barren Measures formations. The palynological content enables delimitation of five palynological assemblages. (i) Scheuringipollenites barakarensis, (ii) Faunipollenites varius, (iii) Gondisporites raniganjensis, (iv) Densipollenites magnicorpus, and (v) Krempipollenites … Show more

“…The part of the succession designated as Barakar Formation in the bore core TRBD‐3 (Tripathi et al, ) is in accordance with the assigned palynostratigraphic age. Palynoassemblage–II (recorded from lowermost part of bore core, between 393.25–511.55 m) comprises Striatopodocarpites , Faunipollenites , and Scheuringipollenites (as dominant taxa) with index taxa Densipollenites densus , Horriditriletes curvibaculosus , Cyclobaculisporites gondwanensis , Verticipollenites crassus , and Striatopodocarpites ovatus .…”

“…However, from a palaeobotanical perspective, the area is very interesting as it shows a complete lower Gondwana sequence and yields a great deal of megafossils and microspores of good preservation. Recent detailed palynological studies (Kar, ; Kar, ; Kar & Srivastava, ; Srivastava, Anand‐Prakash, & Kar, ; Srivastava & Kar, ; Tripathi, V, Murthy, Chakarborty, & Das, ) established the presence of Barren Measures Formation, not reported in this basin in earlier studies (Raja Rao, ). Barring some reports by Greisbach (); Feistmantel (, ); Bose, Banerjee, and Maithy (); Chandra, Singh, and Jha (); Singh, Chandra, and Saxena (); and Pal et al (), this coalfield has never been investigated thoroughly for megafloral studies.…”
