Field work in the South-Central Pyrenees suggests that omission contacts (i.e. younger over older rocks) occur at the base of the Cadí unit (Cadí thrust), and pass laterally into thrusts. This change occurs across tear faults which are present in the hangingwall of the Cadí thrust sheet and which controlled the deposition of Upper Cretaceous sediments (Adraén formation). Detailed mapping in the contact area between the Nogueres and Cadí units has shown that the actual thrust geometry in the study area is controlled by preexisting normal and transfer faults which developed in an already compressional context. Lateral ramps or tear faults develop depending on the angle between the pre-existing extensional transfer fault and the thrust transport direction.

Extensive deposition of marine evaporites occurred during the Early–Middle Eocene in the South‐eastern Pyrenean basin (north‐east Spain). This study integrates stratigraphic and geochemical analyses of subsurface data (oil wells, seismic profiles and gravity data) together with field surveys to characterize this sedimentation in the foredeep and adjacent platform. Four major evaporite units were identified. The oldest was the Serrat Evaporites unit, with a platform‐slope‐basin configuration. Thick salina and sabkha sulphates accumulated on the platform, whereas resedimented and gravity‐derived sulphates were deposited on the slope, and salt and sulphates were deposited in the deep basin. In the subsequent unit (Vallfogona evaporites), thin sulphates formed on the platform, whereas very thick siliciclastic turbidites accumulated in the foredeep. However, some clastic gypsum coming from the platform (gypsarenites and gypsum olistoliths) was intercalated in these turbidites. The following unit, the Beuda Gypsum Formation developed in a sulphate platform‐basin configuration, where the topography of the depositional surface had become smooth. The youngest unit, the Besalú Gypsum, formed in a shallow setting. This small unit provides the last evidence of marine influence in a residual basin. Sulphur and oxygen isotope compositions are consistent with a marine origin for all evaporites. However, δ34S and δ18O values also suggest that, except for the oldest unit (Serrat Evaporites), there was some sulphate recycling from the older into the younger units. The South‐eastern Pyrenean basin constitutes a fine example of a foreland basin that underwent multiepisodic evaporitic sedimentation. In the basin, depositional factors evolved with time under a structural control. Decreasing complexity is observed in the lithofacies, as well as in the depositional models, together with a diminishing thickness of the evaporite units.

The Amélie-les-Bains (Eastern Pyrenees) breccias, recently considered to be Paleocene deep marine deposits, are reinterpreted here as Plio-Quaternary karstic brecciated accumulations. The palaeontological, sedimentological and paleogeographical data proposed in favor of Paleocene age and marine conditions are unfounded. The sediments are found to be devoid of planctonik Foraminifera, a fact that casts doubts on the reliability of the forms supposedly recognized on thin sections of the breccia clasts and cement. The so-called "hemipelagites" and "megablocks" (olistostroma) related to a supposed tectogenic sedimentation in palaeocanyon environments, actually correspond to thin or coarse bedded karstic infillings. The location of the breccias is not in favor of the creation of a trough at the emplacement of the present Tech valley; this would be incompatible with the indisputable post-Paleocene uplift tectonics in the Eastern Pyrenees. The brecciated deposits are closely linked to the carbonate substratum and absent above the surrounding silico-aluminous metasedimentary formations. They stretch along the present topographic surface of the valley flanks and rest upon the Pyrenean (Eocene) thrusts of the Amelie duplex.This new interpretation, which follows previous observations, leads to reject the recent hypothesis involving the development of a "transpyrenean Paleocene trough" filled up with deep marine breccias, following a main "LateCretaceous folding phase" of the Pyrenean orogeny. RESUMELes brèches d'Amélie-les-Bains (Pyrénées-Orientales), récemment considé-rées comme marines et paléocènes, sont réinterprétées comme des accumulations bréchiques d'origine karstique et d'âge plio-quaternaire. Les arguments paléontologiques, sédimentologiques et paléogéographiques cités par les auteurs à l'appui de l'existence d'un bassin marin à brèches sont considérés comme dépourvus de tout fondement. Les microfaunes pélagiques n'ont pas été retrouvées. Les «hémipélagites» et «brèches à blocs» (olistostromes) indiquant la présence de canyons sous-marins syntectoniques sont respectivement considérées comme des remplissages karstiques fins ou grossiers. La réparti-tion des affleurements n'est en outre pas compatible avec la mise en place d'une profonde cuvette sédimentaire sélandienne au droit de l'actuelle vallée du Tech, cuvette dont le développement occulterait tout exhaussement tectonique post-paléocène dans les Pyrénées orientales. Les dépôts bréchiques sont en réalité étroitement dépendants de leur substrat carbonaté et au contraire absents au-dessus des formations argilo-gréseuses et métamorphiques avoisinantes. Ils jalonnent la surface topographique sub-actuelle de la vallée, recoupant ainsi les structures chevauchantes pyrénéennes (éocènes) du duplex d'Amélie-les-Bains.Cette nouvelle interprétation des brèches d'Amélie-les-Bains, jointe à de précédentes observations, conduit à rejeter les récentes hypothèses de la pré-sence d'un «sillon sélandien marin, transpyrénéen, à brèches» et du développe-ment d'une «phase plicative...
