“…In the vicinity of Sierra del Toro, the conglomeratic unit separates into at least two mappable outcrop belts; one oriented approximately north-south and parallel to the basin axis and the other approximately northnorthwest to south-southeast, which crops out in Parque Naciónal Torres del Paine at the Silla Syncline locality (Figs. 1 and 5; Scott, 1966;Winn and Dott, 1979;Sohn et al, 2002;Beaubouef, 2004;Crane and Lowe, 2008;Bernhardt et al, 2011).…”

“…Note that the shaded areas include thick-bedded gravity flow deposits, including sandstone, sandstone matrix conglomerate, mudstone matrix conglomerate, and mudstone-dominated mass-transport deposits. See part A for orientation of cross section; paleoflow was into the plane of the page (modified from Crane, 2004;Bernhardt et al, 2011). “…Many of these studies originate from basins with syn-and/or post-depositional compressional tectonics (e.g. Mutti, 1983;Haughton, 1994;Sinclair and Tomasso, 2002;Hodgson and Haughton, 2004;Bernhardt et al, 2011;Salles et al, 2014;Cantalejo and Pickering, 2014), although paleogeographic reconstructions rarely account for post-depositional tectonic shortening. Studies that undertake palinspastic restoration of turbidite systems, which revises the geometry and dimensions of systems to the configuration during deposition, are rare and tend to be in small depocenters (e.g.…”

“…In the spirit of this conference, and like several other papers in this volume (Bernhardt et al, 2011;Flint et al, 2011;Gagnon and Waldron, 2011;Pyles et al, 2011;Romans et al, 2011), the aim of this paper is the description of the vertical stratigraphic evolution of the MAF in relation to the progressive closure of the foredeep, by presenting a detailed facies analysis of the Langhian to Serravallian deposits and briefly discussing the sedimentary characteristics of the Tortonian strata. The paper will focus on the facies distribution in relation to the basin morphology produced by thrust propagation, with a particular emphasis on a series of bed types, whose vertical and lateral distribution has proven fundamental to understand the role of structural evolution in controlling sedimentation in foreland basins.…”
