Stratigraphic and Microfacies Study of Kometan Formation (Upper Turonian-Lower Campanian), in the Dokan area, Northern Iraq

Abstract: The Kometan Formation is widely distributed in the northern (Kurdistan region) and central Iraq. The studied area is located near the Dokan Dam, about 58 km., to the Northwest of the Sulaymaniyah city, Northeastern Iraq. The Kometan Formation is exposed on the southwest flank of the Sarah anticline. The formation consists of limestone and dolomitic limestone, which have cherts nodules throughout the formation. The Gulneri Formation is recorded below the Kometan Formation with unconformable contact, while at th… Show more

“…Most of the neritic shoal limestone in the Dammam Formation is recrystallized and/or dolomitized, with the bottom half being nummulitic and the upper half having miliolids. The Dammam Formation from several Eocene shallow-water regions of Iraq have been the focus of the most thorough investigations by a number of researchers, including [14, [15], [16], in addition to several researchers in the GEOSURV in [11]. This study aims to identify multiple paleoenvironmental interpretations of carbonate systems and to create a sedimentary model of the Dammam Formation, which is located in the middle of southern Iraq.…”

“…In the Garawanan and Kunaflusa sections the well-bedded light yellow dolomites of the Qamchuqa Formation are directly overlain by 45m reefal Limestone and Dolomites Bekhme Formation and with 0.8m of glauconitic calcareous sandstone at the top (Figure 5) which represent the upper contact of Bekhme Formation. This contact possibly represents unconformities during Turonian to Early Campanian or Early Campanian (Ahmed et al, 2015, Bellen, 1959, Abawi et al, 2006; Jassim and Goff, 2006; Haddad and Amin, 2007; Jaff et al, 2015; Al-Sheikhly et al, 1989; Jassim et al, 1989;Kaddouri, 1982, Malak et al, 2021. The Shiranish Formation consists of two parts the lower part is about 13m of highly fractured marly limestone light brown in color, interbedded with dark grey shale, while the upper part is about 35 m thick of light yellow to milky marly limestone overlain by light green and red shale and sandstone interbedded with then beds of Limestone which indicates Tanjero Formation (Figure5).…”
