Strategy to Decrease the Angle Measurement Error Introduced by the Use of Circular Grating in Dynamic Torque Calibration

Abstract: A circular grating angle encoder is a key component in the dynamic torque calibration system. To improve the accuracy of an angle measurement, in this paper, the source of the angle measurement error of the circular grating is analyzed; an eccentricity error model and an inclination error model are proposed, respectively; further, these two models are combined to establish a total error model. Through the simulation study with the models, the conditions, in which the eccentricity error or inclination error can… Show more

“…On the one hand, large angle measurement generally involves the energy method, which changes the photoelectric energy at different angles. However, this simple energy utilization method has low accuracy [ 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 ] and relies on the stability and detection accuracy of the photoelectric itself [ 52 , 53 ]. On the other hand, phase-based methods allow for higher accuracy and better stability of measurements, e.g., calculating the angle change by monitoring the geometric length change of the light propagation [ 54 ] and laser self-mixing method [ 55 , 56 ].…”

“…In addition, the proposed method achieved the same accuracy level as the hardware method. Du et al [ 14 ] proposed an eccentricity error model and inclination error model based on the angle measurement error of the circular grating. The calibration and compensation methods based on the proposed error model could effectively compensate its angle measurement error with a single reading head and obtain a high-precision measurement angle.…”

“…Jia [12] proposed a method based on the Fourier expansion-back propagation (BP) neural network optimized by a genetic algorithm in 2020, and the measurement error was decreased from 110.2 to 2.7 . In 2021, Du [13] reduced the positioning error of a single reading head by 93.76% with the first and second harmonic fitting method. In 2021, Gurauskis [14] disclosed a technique which used polynomial fitting to compensate the encoder's positioning error and reduced the error by 98%.…”
