Strategies to Reduce Bias and Racism in Nursing Precepted Clinical Experiences

Abstract: Background: Nursing programs are tasked with ensuring diverse, equitable, and inclusive (DEI) learning environments for all student learners. With calls to diversify the nursing workforce, engaging nursing preceptors in program-wide DEI initiatives are crucial. Preceptors lacking commitment to DEI could result in poor patient-preceptor communication, tense learning environments, or biased evaluations of students. “…Personal attributes, both global (e.g., caring, willingness to accept constructive feedback) and specific (e.g., speed in performance of nursing care, time management) were measured as part of competence in some of the studies (Danner, 2014; Gurkova et al, 2018; Rusch et al, 2019; Skúladottir & Svavarsdottir, 2016; Unsworth et al, 2020). Nursing has had a long history of concern with personal attributes as a proxy for professionalism, at times to the detriment of diversity (Johnson et al, 2021). It is important to differentiate personal attributes that are truly necessary for professional nursing practice from characteristics that may not affect nursing competence but instead may be stereotypical.…”

“…The literature is replete with examples of how faculty members can advance health equity in the practice arena. Johnson et al 31 describe the necessity for educating and engaging preceptors in DEI initiatives since preceptors who lack a commitment to DEI may not be sufficiently prepared to provide a bias-free learning environment for students. Faculty can also contribute to the DEI, SDOH, and health equity through service learning, a form of experiential learning that provides students with real-world experiences.…”

“…Nurses' ability to mitigate racism has been brought into question in the literature, and this has been attributed to a focus on cultural competency that tends to depoliticize disparity by ignoring power differentials (Altman et al, 2021;Johnson et al, 2021). The research question was, "What power dynamics exist in the discussion of health inequity in nursing education?"…”
