Global problems associated with conventional, non-biodegradable plastics have urged the society to use more ecofriendly biodegradable plastics. In this study, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) was co-compounded with cassava-based thermoplastic starch (TPS) to prepare biodegradable plastics (i.e. plastics that can be degraded by microbes), in which three different LLDPE/TPS ratios were studied. Acetic acid was used to hydrolyze the polysaccharides by breaking the branched amylopectin that causes the TPS-containing composites brittle and stiff. The biodegradation properties of the LLDPE/TPS composites were determined by observing the level of microbial growth on the sample surface after incubation with potato dextrose agar medium that was inoculated with Penicillium sp. and Aspergillus niger. Burial test in a humid composting medium was also performed to validate the biodegradation properties. The mass change (%) was calculated in relative to the initial mass before burial test. The physical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break) of the bioplastics were determined using universal testing machine before and after burial treatment. The morphology of the sample surface was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the microbial growth increases with increasing TPS content. Negative mass changes were observed on all samples that contain TPS, with increase in the magnitude with increasing TPS content. The tensile strength tends to increase in the first 28 days of burial period in a composting medium then decreases and plateaus, while the elongation at break decreases with increasing burial period. Moreover, samples that contain acetic acid showed less microbial attachment and less biodegradation compared to samples that does not contain acetic acid.

In the context of food packaging design, customization enhances the value of a product by meeting the needs of the consumer. Personalization is also linked to adaptation. This makes it possible to improve the properties of the packaging from various points of view: functional, aesthetic, economic and ecological. Currently the functional and formal properties of packaging are not investigated among themselves, however the study of both properties are the basis for creating a new concept of personalized and sustainable product. In accordance with this approach, the conceptual design procedure of packaging with personalized and adapted geometries based on the digitization of fresh food is proposed in this work. This study is based on the application of advanced technologies for the design and development of food packaging, in this case apples, in order to improve the quality of the packaging. The results obtained show that it is possible to use advanced technologies in the early stages of product design in order to obtain competitive products adapted to new emerging needs.

Los desperdicios de materia prima, ocasionados durante la producción de cualquier empresa, son un problema que debe tratarse, porque representan pérdidas importantes de dinero. En este sentido, debe aumentarse la productividad de los procesos y optimizarlos; por ello, se presenta el caso de una empresa en la ciudad de Medellín (Colombia), dedicada a brindar soluciones con productos plásticos con cuidado del medio ambiente. Sus productos se basan en material recuperado de sobrantes de sus procesos de extrusión, sin embargo, se observa que el uso de este tipo de materia prima ocasiona fallas, que afecta los márgenes de ganancia. La metodología implementada para solucionar la problemática es la simulación de eventos discretos, con la cual, después de diagnosticar la situación y analizar la línea de producción, se proponen y evalúan escenarios de solución y se escoge la alternativa que propone la inversión en nuevos elementos de trabajo. Según los resultados encontrados, es la que más aporta a la solución del problema, donde se observa que la disminución de desperdicios es considerable, dado que disminuyen los desperdicios en un 70 %, aproximadamente.
