Strategies for the emergence of a dominant design for heat storage systems

Abstract: An important component of sustainable home energy systems is the selfsufficient generation and usage of energy. Although sustainable solutions to both generation and usage of energy in homes have been extensively studied in the past, the storage of energy has only scarcely been studied. This paper focuses specifically on thermal energy storage. Three competing designs are currently available: sensible, latent and thermochemical heat storage systems. The question is which will become the dominant design. Releva… Show more

“…This study contributes to the standardization literature and the literature that studies the establishment of dominant designs [6,21,22,34]. It replicates earlier findings with respect to the importance of technological superiority [4,[35][36][37] and flexibility [38] in cases of technology battles and specifically for sustainable energy technologies, and it provides some new insights. Four specific contributions can be distinguished.…”

“…We aim to contribute to the literature on standardization and dominant designs by investigating the extent to which factors for technology dominance can be determined and its process modelled. This has been done in the past by investigating various cases in the energy sector [15] , [16] . However, this is the first time that the case of electrolysis based renewable hydrogen is investigated.…”
