A growing number of diploma-qualified nurses from vocational programs are enrolling in university Bachelor of Nursing programs to upgrade their qualifications. Universities typically provide these students with credit so they enter the Bachelor of Nursing program in second year. Known as pathway students, these students tend to miss the orientating opportunities that other students experience in their first-year university enrolment. This lack of first-year opportunity can be challenging for many pathway students, notably in academic writing. This paper reports on a tailored and scaffolded academic-writing teaching strategy designed for pathway students in their initial semester of learning. Both the students themselves, and teachers report evidence of improvements in academic writing amongst the pathway students.

Not only do nurse academics teach, research, supervise, engage in professional development and professional organisations, they are compelled as academic nurse educators to write for publication, a task that involves expertise, creativity, skill and large amounts of time. This article describes a qualitative reflective analysis of the themes which surfaced during an offsite writing retreat attended by nurse faculty. The authors of this paper discovered an added invaluable benefit of their time at writing retreat: time to engage in social interactions that benefit their professional and personal development. In addition through experience of the retreat has been the increase in publications through the commitment to output, and academic development through engagement in mentoring, collegial partnerships, informal learning, and reflection.

Instructional videos are increasingly being used for educational purposes in academia. Distant learning is showing a massive growth in recent years and instructional videos are the key element of distance learning. The internet is filled with thousands of instructional video clips. However, characteristics such as the presence of a model in the video tend to differ across videos. This study aims to explore the effects of the presence or absence of a model in instructional video clips on the learners' perception of the model, selfefficacy beliefs and perceived learning. A total of 78 Sri Lankan information technology undergraduate students participated in the study. Two instructional video clips on professional writing were used for the study; one where the viewers can see the model (video alternates between the model and the slides), and another one where they can only hear the voice of the model. Two video clips were randomly assigned to each participant and data was collected on their perception of the model, self-efficacy beliefs and perceived learning. The results showed that the presence or absence of the model does not have a significant effect on learners' perception of the model, self-efficacy beliefs or perceived learning. However, both instructional video clips had a positive effect on learners' self-efficacy.
