Strategies for Improving the Sustainability of Data Centers via Energy Mix, Energy Conservation, and Circular Energy

Abstract: Information and communication technologies (ICT) are increasingly permeating our daily life and we ever more commit our data to the cloud. Events like the COVID-19 pandemic put an exceptional burden upon ICT. This involves increasing implementation and use of data centers, which increased energy use and environmental impact. The scope of this work is to summarize the present situation on data centers as to environmental impact and opportunities for improvement. First, we introduce the topic, presenting estimat… Show more

“…Finally, in the context of CE, researches exploring the energy-related issue in connection with blockchain applications are also investigating consumption issues connected with such a technology [ 96 ]. For instance, Manganelli et al [ 97 ] suggest that widespread adoption of those blockchain applications might have significant environmental repercussions, thus hindering the CE transition. Even if energy generation and management represent another consistent area of researches, topics belonging to such cluster seem quite independent and less interlink with other fields of research in CE.…”

“…However, their specific integration within a data center has been studied much less. Some researchers, such as Ebrahimi et al (2014), Guitart (2017), Li et al (2018), Levy (2019), Cheng et al (2021), and Manganelli et al (2021), have studied the relationships between data centers' internal components. Even at an early stage, Jamalzadeh and Behravan sought to establish a holistic framework of data center-related metrics (Jamalzadeh and Behravan, 2012).…”

“…Fossil fuels contribute to massive greenhouse gas emissions, which affect human health, society, and the environment. However, the cost of a low-carbon energy system is high (Manganelli et al, 2021). The COVID-19 situation has prompted governments and policymakers to rethink future investment in eco-friendly energy areas in alignment with the sustainable development goals framework of the United Nations.…”
