Strategies for formulation of effervescent granules of an herbal product for the management of typhoid fever

Abstract: Herbal medicines are currently being adopted as alternatives to orthodox medicines for the management of drugresistant and emerging multidrug-resistant microbial strains of various diseases, including typhoid fever. A herbal decoction, MA 001, manufactured by the Centre for Plant Medicine Research (CPMR), has been used for the treatment of typhoid fever for at least two decades in Ghana with desirable outcomes. MA 001 is formulated from Citrus aurantifolia, Spondias mombin, Latana camara, Bidens pilosa, Trema … Show more

“…In drug formulation, the ease of flow of granular powders is important. This is because free-flowing powders ensure reproducible dosator filling [ 13 , 41 ]. The flow and precompression parameters of the chitosan-pectin-based formulations studied were Carr’s index, Hausner ratio, and angle of repose.…”

“…The stability of the solid dosage form is higher compared to its liquid preparations as the potential degradation of active ingredients in aqueous media, microbial contamination, and the associated disruption of its shelf life are prevented. The effervescent granule should be dispersed in water to prepare a solution for its administration, which will provide an improvement in taste, solubility, and bioavailability of the herbal extract [ 41 ].…”

“…Effervescent powder: 5 Effervescent powders are in the form of granules or coarse to very coarse powders and include medicinal ingredients in dry mixtures that are typically combined with citric acid, sodium bicarbonate, and tartaric acid. Effervescence is produced when acid and base come incontactwith water and react to release carbon dioxide.…”

“…It is used as antiinflammatory, anti-cancer, antidiabetic and also treats stomach pain, stomach and intestinal ulcer, intestinal spasms. FORMULATION OF EFFERVESCENT GRANULES: 5 The needed amount was weighed and geometrically mixed in a mortar, which was then triturated until homogeneous mixture was obtained. The mixture was dried at 100 degree Celsius in hot air oven for twenty-four hours.…”
