Carbon fabrics are widely used in polymer based composites. Nowadays, most of the advanced high-performance composites are based on thermosetting polymer matrices such as epoxy resin. Thermoplastics have received high attention as polymer matrices due to their low curing duration, high chemical resistance, high recyclability, and mass production capability in comparison with thermosetting polymers. In this paper, we suggest thermoplastic based composite materials reinforced with carbon fibers. Composites based on polysulfone reinforced with carbon fabrics using polymer solvent impregnation were studied. It is well known that despite the excellent mechanical properties, carbon fibers possess poor wettability and adhesion to polymers because of the fiber surface chemical inertness and smoothness. Therefore, to improve the fiber–matrix interfacial interaction, the surface modification of the carbon fibers by thermal oxidation was used. It was shown that the surface modification resulted in a noticeable change in the functional composition of the carbon fibers’ surface and increased the mechanical properties of the polysulfone based composites. Significant increase in composites mechanical properties and thermal stability as a result of carbon fiber surface modification was observed.

The advances in technology have led to significant advances in the arms industry. The development of the armor technology has also gained importance in order to protect them from developing the weapons and bullets industry. In this study, it was aimed to increase the ballistic resistance of the materials used as personal protective body armor. Within the scope of the study, hybrid composite plates were produced by compressing high density polyethylene (UHMPW-PE) and carbon fiber materials in different layers using hydraulic press under certain pressure and temperature. The ballistic resistance of the produced plates against fragment effect was investigated in dynamic laboratory conditions according to STANAG 2920 standard. As a result, it was found that ballistic resistance of 25 layers of UHMPW-PE composite increased by 8.06%, 14.6% and 22.6% by adding 1 layer, 3 layers or 6 layers of carbon fiber prepreg, respectively. It was envision that in the future, the prepared hybrid armors can be used as an armor material by creating suitable configurations.

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is one of important materials utilized against impacting threats. In this work, bulk UHMWPE specimens were fabricated in a compression molding chamber, and molding parameters such as pressure and temperature were varied in the specimen preparation stage to investigate the effect of molding parameters on the impact performance. In addition, silicon carbide fillers were included in the UHMWPE matrix to enhance the antiimpact properties of the specimens. From the results, high molding pressure provides enhanced impact resistance due to improved microstructural consolidation. On the other hand, molding temperature just above the melting point of polymer is much beneficial to the anti-impact behavior of the structures. Carbide fillers lead to an increase in the frictional interaction between the impactor and composites and thereby enhancing the impact resistance of the structures. However, the gain in the protective properties performance is restricted up to a certain amount of carbide loading because at higher filler ratios, the composites change from ductile to brittle characteristics. For this reason, crack growth susceptibility develops in the composites at excessive carbide loadings.
