Strategic obfuscation of production capacities

Abstract: Recent supply‐chain models that study competition among capacity‐constrained producers omit the possibility of producers strategically setting wholesale prices to create uncertainty with regards to (i.e., to obfuscate) their production capacities. To shed some light on this possibility, we study strategic obfuscation in a supply‐chain model comprised of two competing producers and a retailer, where one of the producers faces a privately‐known capacity constraint. We show that capacity obfuscation can strictly … Show more

“…While few papers use a mathematical model to analyze the effect of hunger marketing strategy (Durango-Cohen and Wagman, 2014; Porteus et al , 2010), most previous literature related to scarcity strategy with a mathematical model is focused on applicability or inventory of scarcity. For example, Stock and Balachander (2005) used a game-theoretic model to investigate scarcity strategies, and they offered a signaling explanation for the optimality of scarcity strategies.…”

“…We are particularly interested in inter‐temporal capacity and demand dynamics in procurement. However, such dynamics are largely ignored in the auction literature where the focus is on cost and information asymmetries (see, e.g., Durango‐Cohen and Wagman 2014, Gupta et al. 2015, Iyengar and Kumar 2008).…”
