Abstract:The exponential development of information technology has presented many opportunities to organizations; however, it has also presented several challenges. A key challenge is how do organizations effectively use information technology and incorporate it into their strategies to make full use of its capabilities as an enabler. The fast-changing nature of information technology has resulted in little empirical evidence on how it influences organization strategy. The Strategic Alignment Model was a popular model created to assist organizations to align their information technology and their business strategy; however, the growth of technology may have made this model irrelevant in this age. Therefore, organizations need to determine what factors drive this alignment. Using hermeneutic phenomenology, 12 in-depth interviews were conducted within IBM South Africa to determine real-life drivers that help create this alignment. The themes derived from the interview texts reveal that consumers are becoming more empowered; therefore, organizations need to be more flexible in their business models and strategies. Furthermore, the integration of cross-functional roles in the organization at the management level allow for improved alignment between information technology and strategy as better integrated roles bring a combination of these two elements.

Abstract-The alignment between information systems strategy and business strategy as an important driver of competitiveness has predominantly been assessed through quantitative methods without exploring in detail factors that influence strategic alignment and their implications for perceived business performance. Most IS-business strategic alignment studies dominantly focus on entire business and IS strategies resulting in many findings that are too general and inconclusive. This study aims at assessing strategic alignment factors, their interrelationships, and how they influence the IS-business alignment and its consequential effect on the performance of six universal banks in Ghana. The study followed the systematic procedure of grounded theory design and adopted qualitative dominant crossover mixed analysis. The findings of the study indicate strategic alignment between information systems strategy and technological innovation impacts positively on the performance of a firm where IT utilization complements resources and capabilities.

ABSTRACTAlthough the literature on business-IT alignment is substantial, longitudinal studies on the social aspects of the alignment process are still relatively scarce. In this paper, we identify the social factors related to the characteristics and processes of multifunctional work groups that influence the process of operationally aligning IT services and business demands in organizations. To this end, we conducted an in-depth qualitative research on a self-managed cross-functional team composed of business and IT representatives who dealt with systems requirements in a multinational aeronautics turbine maintenance company in Brazil. We assessed the elements of Cohen and Bailey's (1997) group efficacy model, the roles described by Mathieu et al. (2015), as well the level of operational alignment in that context, over the years the team had been meeting. Our results highlight the importance of team characteristics and processes for the development of business-IT operational alignment.
