Strangelet search in S-W collisions at 200AGeV/c

Abstract: A search for new massive particles vnth a lour charge to mass ratio in S -W collisions at a beam momentum of 200 GeV/c per nucleon is presented. Upper limits for the production of strangelets with a mass to charge ratio of up to 60GeV/c at rigidities of +150GV are reported.

“…The accumulated statistics and beam line acceptance allow one to set a limit on the invariant differential production cross section for strangelets in the order of 50 nb GeV 22 c 3 . A similar sensitivity has been obtained previously in S-W collisions at 200 GeV͞c per nucleon [19] by this group. It is planned to continue data taking in the forthcoming lead periods at CERN to further improve the experimental sensitivity.…”

“…Strangelets with lifetimes .10 27 s have been previously searched for in BNL [14][15][16][17][18] and CERN [19] heavy ion experiments as well as in cosmic rays [20]. A recent review is given in Ref.…”

“…These developments triggered several investigations concerning the properties of the multi-Skyrmions (such as e.g., vibrational excitations [8]) as well as their application to baryonic systems containing strangeness [9,10] and heavier flavors [11]. The extension to flavored multibaryons is also motivated by the advent of heavy ion colliders with the possibility of producing strange [12] and even charmed [13] multibaryonic states with rather low baryon number in the laboratory. To describe the strange multibaryons one has to extend the model to SU(3) flavor space.…”

“…New and more sensitive searches for the H-particle (neutral, doublystrange dibaryon) and strangelets have begun at the AGS [270] and SPS [269,271]. These experiments seek to provide the first spectacular observations of such particles or at a minimum to set stringent limits on their production cross sections.…”
