Strains of Uronema marinum (Scuticociliatia)  co-isolated with amoebae of the genus Neoparamoeba

Abstract: Mixed infections of histophagous ciliates and Neoparamoeba spp. Page, 1987 were diagnosed in gill tissue of farmed turbot Psetta maxima (synonym: Scophthalmus maximus) and Atlantic salmon Salmo salar during a study of amoebic gill disease. Ciliates co-isolated from lesions grossly visible on gills of both fish hosts and from 2 species of red algae Lithophyllum racemus and Palmaria palmata were characterized morphologically and by using molecular markers. Sequences of small subunit (SSU) rDNA were determined f… Show more

“…This ciliate species has been reported living in saline environments, as an endobiont in a marine olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) and in a freshwater adult rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) (Jones et al 2010). The ciliate genus Aristerostoma was found as a pathogen on gills of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) (Dyková et al 2010). Other Aristerostoma strains were isolated from surface waters (Dunthorn et al 2009).…”

“…It has been detected simultaneously with the parasites D. lepeophtherii (Steinum et al 2015; Downes et al 2018a; Gjessing et al 2019) , and Trichodina sp . (Rodger & McArdle 1996; Rodger et al 2011b) and Scuticociliatia (Dyková et al 2010). It has also been found alongside salmon gill pox virus (SGPV; Nylund et al 2008; Gjessing et al 2015, 2017, 2019; Hvas et al 2017; Downes et al 2018a) and damage due to the jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca (Marcos‐Lopez et al 2016).…”

“…The species C. irritans is known as the cause of 'white spot' disease in marine fish (Colorni & Burgess, 1997). Similarly, protozoan ciliates have been found on Atlantic salmon (Ferguson et al, 1987;Bermingham & Mulcahy 2007;Dykov a et al, 2010), but scuticociliates have not been observed causing disease in healthy salmon (Scholz et al, 2018a).…”
