Strain Influences the Hydrogen Evolution Activity and Absorption Capacity of Palladium

Abstract: Strain engineering can increase the activity and selectivity of an electrocatalyst. Tensile strain is knownt o improve the electrocatalytic activity of palladium electrodes for reduction of carbon dioxide or dioxygen, but determining how strain affects the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is complicated by the fact that palladium absorbs hydrogen concurrently with HER. We report here ac ustom electrochemical cell, whichapplies tensile strain to aflexible working electrode,t hat enabled us to resolve howt ensi… Show more

“…The commonly nanoparticle fixed working condition has been used to evaluate and characterize the performance of Pd electrocatalysts, where Pd NPs are typically dispersed in water/ethanol solvents containing Nafion, and the mixture is sonicated and drop‐casted onto the surface of a millimeter‐sized electrode. The HER process performing on the Pd NPs is monitored by electrochemical measurements, such as cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, etc [6] . However, the nanoparticles fixed on the electrode surface usually undergo the aggregation, deactivation, and detachment during the electrocatalysis process, hindering the accurate and repeatable evaluation of catalyst activity [7] .…”

“…[14,[17][18][19][20] However,t he underlying mechanism of the increasement remains murky.T his is largely due to the fact that two intertwined mechanisms,i.e., ligand effect and strain effect, are at play in these core/shell nanocatalysts. [19,[21][22][23] And it has been exceedingly difficult to disentangle the respective contributions, which is particularly troublesome when the two effects have opposite contributions. [21,24] Indeed, not knowing the relative importance of the two effects has significantly hampered the development of superior core/shell nanocatalysts.…”
