Stones Development: A Pioneering Management Philosophy for Enhancing Project Performance and Safety

Abstract: The Stones Project is Shell Offshore Inc.'s ("Shell") play opener discovery in the outer Lower Tertiary trend in the Gulf of Mexico ultra-deep water (~9,500 ft. water depth). The initial plan is a phased development, with an FPSO and 8 initial wells for Phase 1, potentially followed by a Phase 2 development after field performance is confirmed. The Stones FPSO is the deepest floating production system in the world. This paper will provide an overview of the Stones project, discussing the challenges that had to… Show more

“…Asset integrity management has evolved over the last few decades, from simple time-based inspections of key equipment to risk and reliability-centered management systems for all safety-critical parts [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]. Asset integrity management encompasses a number of elements that are critical to the long-term viability and serviceability of offshore installations, as seen in various field developments [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. This would help to prevent offshore accidents like Ranger I Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU), Petrobras-36, Macondo Well’s Deepwater Horizon Blowout and Piper Alpha offshore accidents [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ].…”

“…4 Subsea pipelines can also extend into tremendous depths, with one of the deepest pipelines installed at 9500 ft. (;2,900 m) in the US GoM. 5 Similarly ambitious is the Nord Stream, which is so far the longest single subsea pipeline, stretching across 761 miles (;1220 km) in the Baltic Sea. 4 Transportation of produced hydrocarbons have always been a major financial concern for the industry, as transportation by either pipeline or by tankers requires major, upfront investment before any hydrocarbon is produced.…”

“…As the oil and gas production is heading towards the ultra-deep water reservoirs at a depth of 3000 m or more, higher collapse resistance of flexible risers is being required to counter the huge hydro-static pressure [4][5][6]. Normally, the external pressure is resisted by all the layers within the riser body.…”
