Stone size and quality of life: A critical evaluation after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy

Abstract: Objectives: To evaluate the quality of life (QoL) of the patients after extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) on a treated stone size related basis. Methods: 90 patients undergoing ESWL for kidney stones were divided into three groups; Group 1 (n: 30, ≤ 10 mm), Group 2 (n: 28, 11 mm-≤ 20 mm) and Group 3 (n: 32, 20-25 mm). During 3-months follow-up, outcome of the procedure, number of cases with emergency department visits, analgesic required, re-tretatment rates, additional procedures and the changes in … Show more

“…52 Similarly, patients with larger stones had lower MH scores at 1 month and 3 months following SWL. 53 Additionally, BDI (depression) mean scores were lower at 1 month and 3 months post-ureteroscopy (URS) for ureteral stone patients that received stenting compared to a control group that did not receive JJ stenting. 54…”

“…Two studies showed favorable QoL with URS compared to SWL in larger stones, i.e. >10 mm and over >20 mm [51,52], while a study by Sonmez et al reported better HRQoL in URS group compared to ESWL when measured with SF-36 at 14 days after intervention [53].…”

“…Patient experiences and patient reported outcome measures have been increasingly recognized as important factors in treatment decisions [6][7][8]. Emerging data show the utility of validated quantitative instruments in demonstrating changes in health-reported quality of life (QoL) before and after treatment [9][10][11][12]. Many previous studies rely on general QoL instruments that are not specific to kidney stones, such as the Short Form 36 questionnaire (SF-36) [13].…”
