This work focuses on the mechanical, nanomechanical, thermal, and electrochemical properties of epoxy coatings with various percentages of ZnO nanoparticles. The prepared coatings were analyzed after complete curing of 7 days. The dispersion of nanoparticles in the matrix was analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) followed by Fourier-Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to evaluate the effect of the nanoparticles on curing and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) to evaluate its thermal properties. The electrochemical (anticorrosion) properties of the coatings were analyzed by exposing the prepared coatings to a 3.5% NaCl solution. The obtained results indicated that the addition of the nanoparticles was effective at lower the loadings: higher loadings of the nanoparticles led to increased agglomeration because of higher particle–particle interaction. At higher nanoparticle loadings, the curing process was adversely affected, which led to lower curing percentage. The lower degree of curing affected the thermal, mechanical, and electrochemical properties. The increase in nanoparticle loading beyond 2% negatively affected the coating properties.

Waterborne coating is the most popular type of coating, and improving its performance is a key point of research. Cathodic delamination is one of the major modes of failure for organic coatings. It refers to the weakening or loss of adhesion between the coating and substrate. Physical and chemical characteristics of coatings have been studied via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), contact angle measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). Early heterogeneous swelling at the metal-coating interface in non-defective coated metals was elucidated using frequency-dependent alternating-current scanning electrochemical microscopy. Two types of coatings (styrene-acrylic coating and terpolymer coating) were compared. The effects of thickness, surface roughness, and chemical bonding on cathodic delamination were investigated.

In a 3-stage experimental approach, it was attempted to enhance the weathering performance of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites (CFRC). For this purpose, 2 types of UV-blocking nanoparticles titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) and zinc oxide (ZnO) were employed to separately be introduced into the composite matrix. In the first stage, the optimum content of nanoparticles was found to be 0.5 wt.% for both nanoparticles. The second stage of experiments revealed that addition of nanoparticles into CFRC could increase the strength of the composite around 6% to 12% depending on the nanoparticles used. In the third stage (weathering), it was demonstrated that nanoparticles significantly enhanced the weathering stability of CFRC. Finally, it was concluded that while TiO 2 could reinforce the composite more efficiently, ZnO nanoparticles provided a higher level of protection (62% improvement in weathering stability compared with neat composite). The higher protection efficiency of ZnO compared with TiO 2 was explained by its lower photocatalytic activity during weathering.
