“…No splitting of the O 1s and of the Mg(KLL) peaks has been observed that would be characteristic for metallic or non-stoichiometric components. 6 Therefore, we conclude that only stoichiometric MgO has been formed during our preparation.…”

“…Several studies have been carried out for magnesium oxide. [6][7][8][9] They form the basis for well defined studies of defect properties, so that a direct comparison with the wealth of theoretical results will be possible. In several theoretical papers [10][11][12][13] the properties of surface color centers F s on MgO have been investigated.…”

“…In order to grow a MgO layer on Ag(001), Wollschläger et al used a two-step process, Mg deposition followed by oxidation (i.e., post-oxidation), which was compared to the reactive oxidation method. 10 On the Ag(001) surface, the post-oxidized film shows small amount of non-stoichiometric species, which are reduced through additional annealing to 700 K. However, only the MgO film grown by reactive oxidation is well aligned while post-oxidation leads to three different kinds of rotational domains due to the hexagonal structure of the Mg film. 10 In the present study, the growth condition of MgO epitaxy on the Fe(001) surface has been searched through optimizing the growth conditions with in-situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).…”

“…In order to get a more uniform Mg layer through reducing 2-ML MgO clusters and non-stoichiometric species, which might exist as on the Ag(001) surface, 10 the substrate was additionally annealed at 400 • C for 10 min. 10 Figure 2 image of the post-oxidized and additionally annealed Mg/Fe(001) substrate. For getting this image, a bias voltage as high as −5 V was needed, which means that the Fe(001) surface is covered with MgO layers.…”

“…Alternatively one can use thin, sufficiently conducting MgO films grown on different single crystals. 19,20 Sample heating and concomitant excitation of electrons into the conduction band can also be sufficient to overcome charging. 21 …”
