Stocking effectiveness of red sea bream, Pagrus major, in Kagoshima Bay, Japan

Abstract: SUMMARY: Red sea bream Pagrus major stock enhancement attempts in Kagoshima Bay were started in the back bay area in 1974. The project has developed into a large-scale operation, and over one million juveniles have been released in the entire bay since 1981. The commercial catch of red sea bream in this bay had decreased temporarily to 71 tons in 1976, but recovered as the project progressed to 213 tons in 1991. Stocking effectiveness of red sea bream in this bay is evaluated by a fish market census. The censu… Show more

“…The average intra-generation effects, which we used here for yields obtained from released individuals, were summarized from the results of the original authors; red sea bream in Kagoshima Bay (Shishidou, 2002) and Kanagawa Prefecture (KP, 2003), and flounder in Kagoshima Bay (Atsuchi and Masuda, 2004) and Miyako Bay (Okouchi et al, 2004) (Table 1). “…Hatchery release of P. major began in KB in 1974 after P. major numbers were found to be depleted because of the loss of nursery grounds. This is one of the largest MSE programmes in the world (Kitada & Kishino, 2006; Shishidou & Kitada, 2007; Kitada et al , 2009) and has recovered the depleted wild population and increased the annual commercial catch from c . 70 to c .…”

“…The SCFM approach was first applied to red sea bream in Kagoshima Bay. To identify released fish at this location, almost all red sea bream landed at the Kagoshima Fish Market were checked for a deformity of the internostril epidermis (Shishidou 2002; Shishidou & Kitada 2007; Kitada et al 2019). To sample Japanese flounder in Miyako Bay, all flounder at the Miyako fish market were examined (Okouchi et al 1999, 2004).…”

“…For the SCFM, researchers sampled landings by visiting fish markets to cover the range of the stocking effect. The SCFM approach was first applied to red sea bream in Kagoshima Bay, where almost all red sea bream landed at the Kagoshima Fish Market were checked for deformity of the internostril epidermis to identify released fish (Kitada et al, 2019; Shishidou, 2002; Shishidou & Kitada, 2007). In the case of Japanese flounder in Miyako Bay, all flounder at the Miyako fish market were examined (Okouchi, Kitada, Iwamoto, & Fukunaga, 2004; Okouchi, Kitada, Tsuzaki, Fukunaga, & Iwamoto, 1999).…”
