Stochastic resonance in MoS2 photodetector

Abstract: In this article, we adopt a radical approach for next generation ultra-low-power sensor design by embracing the evolutionary success of animals with extraordinary sensory information processing capabilities that allow them to survive in extreme and resource constrained environments. Stochastic resonance (SR) is one of those astounding phenomena, where noise, which is considered detrimental for electronic circuits and communication systems, plays a constructive role in the detection of weak signals. Here, we sh… Show more

“…In this regard, extensive efforts have been devoted to explore suitable materials for next‐generation photodetectors in the past decades. [ 7–10 ] Since the discovery of graphene by Geim et al, [ 11 ] the family of 2D materials has drawn great attention for their favorable applications in modern electronic and optoelectronic devices. [ 12–17 ] In general, 2D materials possess unique and unconventional properties such as strong light–matter interaction, tunable optical absorption, and outstanding carrier transport and thus, are expected to be one of the most potential substitute materials to compensate the limitation of traditional semiconductors.…”

“…Recently, a microprocessor based on MoS 2 FETs was reported 13 . Additionally, 2D FETs have found applications in various emerging technologies such as sensors for internet of things, neuromorphic computing, biomimetic devices, valleytronics, straintronics, and optoelectronic devices [14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] . While initial demonstrations of prototype devices relied on exfoliated flakes, the 2D community has rapidly transitioned towards the growth of large-area films to address manufacturing needs for any commercial applications.…”

“…Signal to noise ratio (SNR) and energy consumption are critical parameters for a photodetector. [44,45] SNR is defined as SNR = Signal power /Noise power and SNR of the fabricated device was found to be ≈143 dB and detailed calculation procedure is included in the Supporting Information. Further energy consumption of the fabricated photodetector was calculated to be ≈151 µJ.…”
