Stochastic Optimization of PQ Powers at the Interface between Distribution and Transmission Grids

Abstract: This paper addresses the volt-var control of distribution grids embedding many distributed generators (DGs). Specifically, it focuses on the compliance of powers to specified PQ diagrams at the high voltage/medium voltage (HV/MV) interface while the voltages remain well controlled. This is achieved using a two-stage optimization corresponding to two different classes of actuators. The tap position of capacitor banks is selected on a daily basis, given a stochastic model of the input powers prediction, which al… Show more

“…In [8], a rule-based central controller is calculating the reactive power compensation level from Distributed Generators (DG), to which level the DG comply according to their capabilities. In [9], a two-stage optimisation method is employed for controlling both voltage levels and reactive power exchange. The tap positions of capacitor banks are optimised on a daily basis, and reactive power support from DG on an hourly basis.…”

“…Overall, the proposed methodologies can be divided into those that have as an objective to minimise deviations from set-points [4,6,7] and those that have as a constraint to keep the reactive power exchange within certain limits [5,8,9]. This paper falls in the second category, and its objective is to keep reactive power exchange between transmission and distribution grids within the limits specified by the TSO.…”

“…The decision phase is an approximation based on the off-line sampling. The paper [10] presents a controller which ensures that the power at the high-voltage/medium-voltage interface remains within specified active and reactive power limits. The algorithm uses a linear power flow and assumes that power consumptions and productions are Gaussian variables.…”

“…Several studies have investigated the reactive power exchange at the transmission-distribution interface, but, in most of the cases, they were focused on the problem only from the DNO"s point of view, considering stiff voltages in the TSO grid and pre-defined ranges of reactive power exchange. In [7], a two-stage optimization routine is developed to tune controllers such that the power confidence levels at the HV/MV interface remain within specified limits. In [8], the author proposes two-time scales to schedule the planning and to perform the operational optimization of interface powers considering uncertainties.…”
