Stimuli-responsive photonic polymer coatings

Abstract: This feature article focuses on the highlights in the development of photonic polymer coatings that can change their volume or surface topology in a reversible, dynamic fashion when exposed to an external stimulus. Topographic response is established using hydrogels or liquid crystal polymer networks. By changing the surface corrugation in response to light various functional coating properties can be modulated, for instance wettability and/or mechanical friction. The same volume changes in photonic coatings c… Show more

“…This type of chiral structures has also been explored in the preparation of optical sensing devices for different types of stimuli [246,250,251]. A change in the molecular order, produced for example by temperature variation, can modify the cholesteric pitch and therefore the reflection wavelength becoming the system a temperature sensor.…”

“…For In this review, the focus will be on surface relief gratings and topographies created by light in solid azobenzene-containing polymers. Light responsive coatings that contain other photochromic dyes (including spiropyrans or coumarins), gels, or hydrogels [22] are beyond the scope of this review. First, surface relief gratings based on linear azo polymers will be discussed and then topography changes in azo polymer networks will be presented.…”

“…This contactless approach grants the possibility of locally [22,23], color [22,24], etc.). In order to make materials responsive to light, a light-sensitive molecule can be incorporated in the polymer [22]. A tremendous number of light-responsive trigger molecules exist [25].…”

“…[4][5][6] The azobenzene molecules allow for controlled switching, based on the trans-to-cis and cis-to-trans isomerization. These can be controlled by selectively illuminating the azobenzene's absorption bands, being 365 and 455 nm, respectively.…”
