“…Thus, no effect of exogenous PGF2-alpha on the secretion of ir-β-EP was observed in this study. These results are not consistent with a previous report by Aurich et al [22] in which cloprostenol stimulated a prompt increase in secretion of β-EP. They observed that the increase in β-EP release was transient and β-EP concentrations decreased by 20 min after PGF2-alpha administration.…”

“…Lincoln, MRC Reproductive Biology Unit, Edinburgh, UK. Since the antiserum is crossreacted at 100% with human β-lipotropin, and about 30% of immunoreactivity extracted from bovine plasma eluted on HPLC at the position of β-lipotropin [22], the values were expressed as plasma immunoreactive β-EP (ir-β-EP) concentrations. All samples were measured in triplicate.…”

“…Increased -endorphin concentrations around parturition have been reported previously in cows (Aurich et al 1993), women (Chan et al 1993, Fajardo et al 1994, McLean et al 1994) and rats (Wardlaw & Frantz 1983). …”

“…Bacigalupo et al (1990) reported that pain intensity, scored by women during spontaneous labour, correlated positively with the concentration of plasma -endorphin and cortisol. Plasma levels of cortisol and -endorphin are elevated during labour in cattle (Hudson et al 1975, Aurich et al 1993) and goats (Hydbring & Olsson 1995), but there are no reports of any correlations between these hormones and the severity of labour in ruminants.…”

“…Maternal and fetal 3endorphin were correlated, as were its concentrations and fetal obstetric difficulty (81). During parturition in cows, there was a marked increase in 3-endorphin that paralleled the increase in oxytocin, even to the extent that it was released in an episodic manner in conjunction with uterine and abdominal contractions, suggesting that it interacted with oxytocin (26). In pigs, however, no change in 3-endorphin occurred with pregnancy (309).…”
