Stimulation of Phospholipid Biosynthesis during Frost Hardening of Winter Wheat

Abstract: Lipids were labeled with 3P during frost hardening of two varieties of winter wheat (Triticumn aestivum), hardy Kharkov and much less hardy Champlein. The main labeled compounds were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, and phosphatidylglycerol. With time of incorporation the proportion of the radioactivity incorporated into the lipids increased in phosphatidylcholine, especially in Kharkov and at 1 C. During hardening, phospholipid synthesis was greatly stimulated in Kharkov, b… Show more

“…However, linolenic acid increases in the phospholipids of the shoots during hardening, but this increase is masked in total lipids because of the predominance of chloroplast linolenic acid-rich galactolipids (12,14). Our results (12, and this paper) show however that contrary to the opinion of St. John and Christiansen (9), low temperature can significantly alter fatty acid unsaturation in relatively mature tissue under conditions where growth is very limited, presumably because under hardening conditions membrane synthesis is very active (11).…”

“…Many plants capable of cold hardening exhibit an increase in lipid unsaturation (24) and an increased level of phospholipids during hardening (6,16,17,23,26,29). This has led to the speculation that the enhanced fluidity of the membrane by lipid unsaturation is related to cold hardiness.…”

“…However, a slight increase in PA and a slight decline in PC during germination at 2 C was observed. Willemot (25) The phospholipid composition of some plant species is reported to be affected by temperature. When rye (Secale cereale L.) seedlings were exposed to cold temperatures (4 C), the relative levels of PC and PI decreased and the proportion of PA increased (24).…”
