“…The anabolic effect of insulin on connective tissue and its role as a potent growth factor for connective tissue has been described [ 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Early studies performed on whole animals, organs or tissues indicated that insulin is required for the optimal production of sulfated mucopolysaccharides and collagen, two major components of connective tissue [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ]. In experiments conducted on articular cartilage explants harvested from patients undergoing knee joint replacement, Cai et al [ 11 ] reported that insulin inhibited nitric oxide production and stimulated matrix synthesis by counteracting the deleterious effect of interleukin 1 (IL-1), high levels of which are usually found in arthritic joints.…”
