Stimulation of Erythrocyte Membrane Blebbing by Naproxen Sodium

Abstract: Naproxen sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) having antipyretic and analgesic properties, mainly used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Eryptosis is an alternative term used for suicidal erythrocyte death. In the current study, eryptotic effect of naproxen sodium characterized by membrane blebbing was investigated in erythrocytes after 48 hours of treatment with different concentrations (1-25 µM). The experimental work related to investigation of eryptosis was do… Show more

“…observed that xenobiotics induced oxidative stress results in membrane blebbing of erythrocytes. 36 Inhibition of the membrane blebbing confirms the role of calcium in the oxidative stress induced eryptosis. Naveed et al, 37 shared the similar information that calcium channel blockage results in a decrease of the mean cell volume of erythrocytes indicating a stoppage of oxidative stress stimulated membrane blebbing.…”

“…Oxidative stress is a reported mechanism of eryptosis and variation among anti-oxidative enzymes in an important indicator of oxidative stress. 23 Superoxide dismutase enzyme catalyzes the dismutation of O 2 free radicals that on accumulation may results in lowering the superoxide dismutase’s level and mitochondrial dysfunction resulting in oxidative stress. 24 Catalase is an iron-dependent enzyme that may act peroxidatively or catalytically 24 and considered as a major antioxidant enzyme.…”
