Background and Objective: Soil contamination resulting from crude oil spills poses an environmental threat in the Niger Delta Area of Nigeria and the world at large and the remediation of oil-polluted soil is one of the major problems for environmental research. This study investigated the effect of urea as an amendment (remediating material) on soil properties and hydrocarbon reduction in crude oil-contaminated soil at Botem-Tai in Rivers State, Nigeria. Materials and Methods: A Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was used and the experimental treatment were: B1: Polluted soil without urea, B2: Polluted soil with 20 g urea addition, B3: Polluted soil with 40 g Urea addition, B4: Unpolluted soil. Physical-chemical and microbial analyses were done on soil samples from the different treatment plots. Results: The significant reductions (p = 0.05) in Total Hydrocarbon Content (THC) and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) of polluted soil with urea addition (B2: 193.98 and 135.90 mg kgG 1 and B3: 708.13 and 615.40 mg kgG 1 ) compared to the polluted without urea (B1: 1963.67 and 1014.37 mg kgG 1 ) as against the initial of 2926.00 and 1189.96 mg kgG 1 recorded. Conclusion: Hence, the use of urea in in situ remediation of crude oil-polluted soil proved effective.

Background and Objective: Crude oil pollution is a serious issue in Nigeria. There is, therefore, a need to source an affordable method that is eco-friendly for remediating these polluted soils. The study investigated the use of cassava peel waste as a bio stimulating agent in an in situ bioremediation of crude oil polluted site. Materials and Methods: Treatments were as follows, H 1 : Polluted soil with no bio-stimulation (Control), H 2 : Polluted soil bio-stimulated with 500 g cassava peel, H 3 : Polluted soil bio-stimulated with 1000 g cassava peel and H 4 : No pollution, no bio-stimulation (double control). Soil pH, electrical conductivity, moisture content, nitrogen, phosphorus, total organic matter, total organic carbon, potassium, total petroleum hydrocarbon, total hydrocarbon content and microbial population in soil were monitored at 0, 2 and 4 months. Results: Results showed that the percentage reduction of THC and TPH in the soil after 4 months were as follows, H 2 (90.48 and 81.39%), H 3 (80.19 and 63.81%) and H 1 (32.90 and 14.76%), respectively. Soil properties improved with a concurrent increase in the microbial population in the bio-stimulated soil as compared to the control. Conclusion: This result proves that cassava peel waste is an effective bio-stimulating agent in crude oil degradation especially at 500 g m 3 compared to other treatment options hence providing an alternative for the remediation of crude oil-polluted soil, especially in the Niger Delta part of Nigeria.

Background and Objective: Environmental pollution resulting from oil spills during exploration and exploitation of petroleum resources in the Niger Delta Region is a major challenge in the development of the region. An investigation on the remediation potential of Andropogon tectorum in crude oil polluted soil amended with urea was conducted on a crude oil impacted farmland at Botem Tai. Materials and Methods: A Latin Square Design (LSD) was used for the experiment and the treatments were: P1(Phytoremediation soil without amendment), P2 (Phytoremediation soil with 20 g Urea amendment), P3 (Phytoremediation soil with 40 g Urea amendment) and P (Polluted soil without phytoremediation and amendment) which served as the control. Results: The result showed that Andropogon tectorum was tolerant to and had the potential for phytoremediation of crude oil polluted soil. The addition of urea significantly improved the potential of Andropogon tectorum as higher reductions in TPH (56.93 and 92.66%) and THC (76.52 and 95.81%) were obtained in phytoremediation soil amended with 40 and 20 g urea at 2 and 4 months, respectively as compared to TPH (1.34 and 14.76%) and THC (24.75 and 32.90%) recorded in the control (P). Results also showed that urea amendment increased the uptake and accumulation of hydrocarbon in Andropogon tectorum with the highest accumulation of TPH (1.79±0.01 and 2.68±0.02 mg kgG 1 ) and THC (4.45±0.56 and 26.97±4.11 mg kgG 1 ) in treatment with 40 g urea amendment. Conclusion: Andropogon tectorum amended with 20 g urea increased hydrocarbon reduction rate in crude oil polluted soil; showing its great potential in remediating crude oil polluted soil.
