Stimulating knowledge discovery and sharing

Abstract: Most of the available knowledge management systems pay little attention to two important aspects: the need of supporting emerging communities of interest together with the official organizational structure; and the need of cluing together knowledge associated with any kind of involved entity including people, communities, and informal knowledge. The MILK system enhances knowledge discovery and sharing by providing services addressing these aspects and supplying innovative interfaces and interaction styles. The… Show more

“…Knowledge discovery interacts with the knowledge repository and utilizes data mining techniques to discover trends in the data that were not known previously (Becerra-Fernandez et al, 2004). For example: given the profile of a new project, it is possible to collect information about any other project that has similarities with the current one, be aware of people that are interested in the same subject, or identify documents that talk about the same argument (Agostini, Albolino, Michelis, Paoli, & Dondi, 2003).…”

“…An automatic weight-adjustment mechanism adjusts the weight of positive and negative descriptors to ensure that the short-term descriptor records major changes in the user's interests immediately. In addition, a profiling approach has been adopted in the workplace proposed to enhance knowledge retrieval and promote knowledge sharing among project-based or interestbased groups (Abecker et al, 2000;Agostini, Albolino, De Michelis, De Paoli, & Dondi, 2003;Davies, Duke, & Stonkus, 2003); and a cooperative agent architecture has also been developed to facilitate task-based information filtering within a work process (De Bra, Houben, & Dignum, 1997). In this the latter type of framework, information filtering techniques combined with an intelligent agent-based architecture are commonly adopted to streamline the delivery of knowledge from internal or external knowledge repositories (Spies, Clayton, & Noormohammadian, 2005;Ye & Fischer, 2002).…”

“…The interaction area has two main foci: (1) what people do in terms of activities and contents, and (2) how people accomplish a given task. The former deals with questions like what people need (or want) to do with systems that go beyond traditional mouse-monitor-keyboard devices; what "allowing for seamless transition between devices and contexts" means; how private spaces integrate with social shared spaces; and so forth.…”

“…The framework is potentially accessible in multi-modal and multi-channel fashion. In the MILK project we have developed a PC-based interface [1], ad-hoc solutions to support both social interaction, via interactive shared screens, and private interaction via cell phones. An open issue is still the development of an integrated and adaptive support for seamlessly moving among different environments.…”
